Time and Location: 12:10pm, Zoom

Chair: President Tom Savary

Introduction: Matt B. shared a rendition of O Canada sung by a youth choir, which was followed by a moment of silence in honour of the Singh family.

Guests: Our guest speaker, Mr. Evan Price.

Speaker: Evan Price

Since 2000, Evan Price has founded and built agriculture businesses in Canada; he grew to be the largest distributor of fresh fiddleheads in Nova Scotia with the largest hop farm in the province. After years in the field Evan co-founded Truro Cannabis, a licensed producer by Health Canada.

As President of Truro Cannabis, he built a team that authored over 2,600 original pages for the ACMPR application, raised over $25 million in private capital, and navigated some of the most rigorous approval processes in the country.

Evan has raised private and institutional funds on small and large scales in very tough climates and built returns for investors while creating value for employees and consumers. Working in niche markets has made him a keen manager with an eye for growth. Evan completed various executive training programs at Harvard Business School Online, and has been a member of Mensa since 2017. In 2018 he founded Fior Capital to fund new investment opportunities around the world.

Evan was introduced by member Ryan Beazley, who explained that they went to high school together. Evan outlined his progression from growing hops/fiddleheads to cannabis (hops and cannabis are cousins!), and then to his current business. He looks for businesses that are hampered or depressed, looks at the cyclical trends and finds investors to match their needs. He explained that he is the launch pad for business that are stuck between where they are and where they want to be.

Evan was thanked by President Tom for a most interesting presentation.

Committee Reports:

Rotary Cares: Alana updated the club that the playground is nearing completion. All that is left is to finish the play huts and lay sod. There will be another "Get stuff Done" day planned but at this time the Trustees are planning a "Grand Opening" of the playground at 1pm on October 3.  It was on October 1 last year that the project was launched on the Global News broadcast, so the team feels it makes sense to reach out to Global as well as CBC-TV to see if they would like to cover the story thus far. A committee meeting will be called very shortly to discuss next steps for fundraising.

Report on Members' Health: Joanna reported that Barbie Reynolds is currently in hospital. We all wish her a speedy recovery.

Secretary's Report: Darlene reminded us that there is a Directors' meeting Tuesday, September 14 at 7pm via Zoom. All are welcome to attend.

President's Report: Tom commented that he was pleased to see such a good turnout (> 500 people is being reported) for the vigil for Mr. Singh on Friday night. Several Rotarians took part.
There was an extensive conversation about the possible return to in-person meetings at the Glengarry (please refer to email from Alana of September 10 for more details), including options for hybrid meetings (some attending in person, some virtually). Lech is able to work with the Glengarry and his IT people to make sure we get the best possible internet connection that we can in the Dining Room. We discussed that the Glengarry will have to abide by the provincial policy effective October 4 that only those who are double vaccinated will be able to attend. It was decided that Lech will create a short survey to send to members to gauge interest in a return to in person, as well as how they would prefer to handle the need to show proof of their vaccination. If we agree to return, it could happen as early as October 5.

Happy Mug: The following members were happy today -
Lech, for Olivia living her best life at U of Ottawa
Joanna, for a camping holiday
Ryan, buying long johns for hockey season
Donna, a wonderful visit from friends on her 80th birthday

The meeting was adjourned at 1:04pm.
