Opening/Chair: The meeting was opened in the usual manner with the sound of the bell and the playing of O Canada. Kevin Quinlan was the chair for the day.
Visitors/Guests: Our speaker, Mauricio José Rico Quiroz, was the only guest today.
Speaker: Mauricio José Rico Quiroz is a Rotary Exchange Student from Venezuela. Mauricio Rico, goes by Mauro and 17 years old. He is from San Cristobal, a border city with Colombia in the west of the country.
Mauro's parents usually work in Colombia and find supplies there. However they're not able to do that now due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
Mauro is the oldest of three children in the family. His brother Diego, is 15 years old and his sister Genesis (pronounced as Henesis) is 10 years old.
Mauro very keen on politics and global affairs and is an avid participant in models of United Nations. In Venezuela, he was an Interactor, so volunteered many times in different activities with his sponsor Rotary Club Valle de Santiago.
With the aid of a powerpoint presentation, Mauro provided an excellent overview of the history of his country and the challenges of hyperinflation, economic stagnation, failing infrastructure, government incompetence and corruption. While rich in natural resources and once one of the best countries in South America to visit and live in, Venezuela is now seeing a mass exodus of people to surrounding countries and a failure of basic services. Everything is in short supply from food and water to medicines and electricity. Political protest often leads to violence. The Covid-19 situation has made the situation much worse.
In the midst of this, he explained how Rotary is working to make life better for his people through medical and humanitarian projects.
Mauro answered several questions and was thanked by our chair.
Member Health: Kevin reported that he has had his first phone distance consult with his family doctor. It worked well, especially since he is in NFL and his doctor is in Truro!
