Opening/Chair: Kirk Saint was the chair today and he asked Laurie Sandeson to lead the group in the singing of O Canada. This was followed by a moment of personal reflection.
Visitors/Guests: In addition to the speakers, there were a couple of other guests today.
Carrie Burke was visiting us again.
Trinkie Coffin was accompanying Garth.
Speaker: Todays speakers wereWarren and Andrea Manthorne on the topic of Wooden Boat Building.
Warren and Andrea have lived in Truro for about 27 years. Warren is from the Eastern Shore of Nova Scotia (Seal Harbour, Guys. Co) and Andrea is from St. John's NL. They have been building boats together for about 28 years and Warren has been building them since he was 13. Boat building has been in his family for at least 7 generations.
With the help of a very informative slide presentation, Warren and Andrea Manthorne told the group about the wooden ships and boats they are building in Upper Onslow at the Eye and Batten Wooden Boatworks.
You'd be surprised about the size of their operation right in our community. Using traditional methods, they are currently working on 2 schooners, their largest project is the 23-metre schooner Lena Blanche, which is their personal schooner. It has been 10 years in the making.
Warren and Andrea described the process from selecting and cutting some of the trees in the forest to designing and building the tools they need for the various tasks. The framing is solid oak, the planking is pine and other structural elements are Douglas fir. There are no paper plans. Instead a hull was carved and then scaled up to the size they needed for the various parts. They have their own sawmill and even have their own foundry where they can cast bronze parts for the ships.
There have been a lot of visitors from all over the world to their boat shop and over the years have made many friends. People will bring them old tools, some of which they have found a use for on a daily basis. The old tools are often best of the old jobs.
The engines for their ship are vintage 1968-69 that have rebuilt to like new new condition.
The Lena Blance is nearing completion and will be hauled by truck to Goldbrough to be launched.
Ken Maclean thanked the Manthornes on behalf of the club for their excellent presentation.
Member Health: It was reported that Kevin Quinlan had broken a bone in his foot and was unable to drive. Get better soon Kevin.
Announcements and Reports:
Jim reminded everyone about the upcoming RLI session in Dieppe on April 6th. There is a good registration from NB however it would be great to have some people from our club attend. It's a great opportunity to learn more about Rotary.
Jim also reminded the group about registering for the Rotary Ski Fun day at Ski Wentworth on March 10th. If there are any questions please ask Jim. You don't need to ski if you don't want to. There will be some trying some snowshoeing. You can just come to have lunch. At this point there are only 5 registered so we need some more to go ahead. The cheapest option if you need equipment and a lift pass is the complete package that includes an hour lesson. It is cheaper than the equipment and lift on their own.
Leck reminded members about the need to get the yearbooks, photos, stickers and (in some cases) invoices out to subscribers as soon as you can. Feed back has been very positive.
President's Report: President Ryan reminded people about the Coldest Night of the year walk and asked that people respond to him when he sends out an email asking Rotarians to participate.
Happy Mug: The happiest Rotarian today was Terry Pook who had gotten a call that she was in the running for a local Chase the Ace draw on the weekend. She had to get to the legion quickly but ultimately was not the winner. It was exciting anyway.
50/50: Speaking of exciting... Alana had the winning ticket and with closed eyes was able to find the joker so went home $43 richer.
New Member Proposal: The Board of Directors have accepted the recommendation of the Membership committee for the induction of Carrie Burke, Operations Manager at East Coast Dental Centre as a member of the Rotary Club of Truro. It is intended that the formal induction ceremony will take place at an upcoming regular meeting.
The spring Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) session is being held in Dieppe NB on Saturday April 6, 2019 at the CCNB Campus, 505 Rue du College located off Champlain St in Dieppe, NB. The sign in desk opens at 8:15 am and the sessions will run from 9:00 am to about 4:00 pm.
Having Rotarians attend an RLI session has proven to be a major benefit for both the member and their clubs. The basic RLI program consists of series of three one day Parts. The material in each part is organized to gradually increase the participants' Rotary knowledge and leadership skill and are taken sequentially over a period of time. Anoverview of the RLI program and the three parts can be found on the RLI page of the Website.
Depending on there being enough people who register in advance, all three Parts of the program will be offered. If there are not enough registered for any of the Parts before the cutoff date of March 26th, that Part will be cancelled.
Registration is all done on-line byclicking this link. The fee payable by cheque (or cash) at the door is $125. Breaks and lunch are included in the fee. When you register, indicate you are paying by cheque.
Participants are responsible for their own hotel booking if needed.
