Visitors/Guests: There were several guests today including Rotarian Peter Haptlata, his son Max (our speaker for the day) and Hattie Dyck, guest of Wayne Gillis.
Speaker: Our speaker today was
Max Hatlapa. Deputy Head of Corporate Security & Aviation Security Manager for Lufthansa Technik Group. Lufthansa Technik Group is the world‘s leader for Maintenance Repair and Overhaul for aircraft.
Max was born in 1984 in Truro, N.S. He is a former member of the Canadian Armed Forces. He is married to a German elementary school teacher they have three children. Currently they live in Germany but Max hopes to relocate back to Canada.
Lufthansa has over 28,000 employees in 35 sites and while centered in Europe, it is expanding into other area and partnering with other companies to provide service. Max has 11 people in his group.
Max related the story about his role in the 2017 G20 meeting in Hamburg. As head of security for Lufthansa he had a very active role in the event. He described the challenges of trying to manage the expectations of the security details for the leaders of the all the countries who make up the G20. For the Hamburg meeting, they all flew into the cities airport and several countries used the facility as their base of operations. It took some major negotiations.
Countries take a radically different approach for security, for example, Canada arrived with one plane and a small security detail. The US has 28 massive planes, hundreds of troops. vehicles, weapons and other equipment. They reserved all the rental cars in Northern Germany for the event.
Security is certainly necessary as there are always protests (sometimes violent) that accompany any of the G7 or G20 meetings.
The Canadian contingent was pleased to have worked with a Canadian based in Germany and Peter was rewarded in a most Canadian manner; a 2-4 of Keiths!
After several more stories and questions from the audience, Max was thanked by Chester.
Member Health: Ken Maclean reported that Christine's husband Bill is in the Hospital. We all wish him the best.

- Joanna was happy about the presentation and related her own story of meeting the PM when he was young. There was no beer involved.
- Ted Jordan was happy to relate how this was the 10th anniversary of he and Charlene quitting smoking. They figured they had saved $160K during that time so they used some of that money for a trip to Ottawa to visit their son.
- Richard was happy to have had a great family visit on PEI and at the lake. It is so quiet now. ;-) Grandparents understand.
50/50: Al Cooze had the right ticket however he could not come up with the Joker so the $83 pot continues to build.
