Opening/Chair: Chester MacPhee was the chair today and he asked Garth to lead the group in the singing of O Canada. This was followed by a moment of personal reflection.
Visitors/Guests: Speaker Georgina Fitzpatrick was the only guest today.
Speaker: Georgina Fitzpatrick is a senior level risk management professional with 30 years experience in the development and implementation of diverse risk management programs for the financial services industry. Her topic was on "Protecting your Financial Security in the Digital Age"
The Fraudcents program helps people understand the scope of mass market fraud and what they can do to prevent being victims.
Fraud is a huge problem in Canada (and worldwide) and while seniors are particularly targeted, it can affect anyone.
She reported that the 2014-16 period it is estimated that $200M was lost to fraud in Canada. If you consider that only 3-5% of frauds are reported the problem is truly spectacular.
Georgina listed the top 10 types of mass market fraud in Canada. The "Romance" scam is the top followed by the "CRA" and "Bank Fraud" scam. While the telephone is still a popular means of committing these frauds, the internet has opened a whole new means of getting to vulnerable people.
She ran through a number of examples that many had heard about and some that were less well known. She encouraged people to be aware and "trust their Gut". If it does not sound right it is best to check. She provided some great tips and places to get help when you need it.
Judging by the response of members to the presentation, many Rotarians have already experienced some of these scams and appreciated Georgina bringing them to our attention.
She was thanked by Rotarian Ken Maclean who, in his former life a Police Chief, had seen more than his share of these cases
Member Health: Darlene reported that her wrist, while still in a cast, was progressing. Terry reported on the results of eye surgery she had recently had.
Ken Maclean reported that the club had been invited to participate in a celebration at the NSCC on April 3rd. See him for details if you are interested in going.
Brian Matthews reported on the Fun day that the club put on for kids through the Christmas index program last Saturday. 46 young people had been treated to a day of swimming and rock climbing at the RECC.
Jane reported that the Bollywood committee would be meeting on April 23rd to get the project started for another year.
Secretaries Report: Jane reported that she had circulated a request from a student in Ontario to complete a survey for a school project. This was supported by a Rotary Club there. She encouraged people to participate by completing the survey.
Happy Mug: There were a number of Happy Rotarians this week. Spring must be in the air.
Terry who had had successful eye surgery and couldn't say enough about the great health care services we have locally. She was also happy to report that the family she had mentioned as candidates to come to our community had been approved and it was hoped they could come in a few months. Terry would be acting as contact for those interesting in helping donate things for their household.
Kirk was happy to be heading off to the Dominican Republic on vacation
Keith was happy to have gone out on Sunday on his road bike for the first time this season.
Brian who reported that he had had a very positive response to the polio fundraising dinner that he and Carol were hosting.
Matt reported that as a result of story about our club supporting a person in getting a new wheelchair, a family member had been inspired to make a donation to the cause as well.
50/50: It was Terry Pook's day, as she not only had the right ticket but she found the joker and went away with the $9.00 pot. She explained that she had had a string of good luck recently with draws and raffles. Perhaps she should be buying lottery tickets.
