Feb 10, 2020 Bulletin

Opening/Chair: Dave Ritcey was the chair today and he asked Alana to lead the group in the singing of O Canada.  This was followed by a moment of personal reflection

Visitors/Guests:
  • Kyle Andrews was a guest today of his Rotarian partner Jim Harman
  • Justine MacDonald, a new massage therapist with Joanna McGowan's Truro Chiropractic Clinic practice was visiting the club today.
Speaker: Our speaker as not available today so as a last minute substitute, Program Chair Kevin Quinlan filled in.  He relayed a touching story that shows true Rotarian spirit.

Briefing, Kevin had run across a family at the bus station who seemed to be in difficulty. One of their children was suddenly ill.  Without hesitation Kevin and his wife Sharon went into action helping the couple from Belize while their son was taken to the local hospital and then transported to Halifax by helicopter.  The Quinlan's took the rest of the family to the city to be reunited and have maintained contact since. While the cause of the problem for the young person or the final outcome is not known... we do know that Kevin and Sharon have demonstrated kindness to people when they needed it the most.  Well done. The entire Club thanks you.

Member Health: It was reported that Larry Beazley has phenomena.  Get better soon Larry.

Announcements and Reports:
  • Laurie reminded everyone that she was still looking for people to help with a RYLA session this April.  Let her know and she would be in touch with details.
  • Martina reported for the Scholarship committee.  She has touched base with the guidance offices at the schools and would employ the same process as last year for selection.
  • Martina also reported that the Camp Tidnish process would run the same as previous years.  It is fairly automatic and we tend to support the same campers each year.
  • Ken MacDonald reported that the deadline for application for Adventure in Citizenship was this Friday and he encourage people to get their young friends to apply.
President's Report: No report.

Happy Mug:
  • Dave Ritcey was happy the by-election had finally been called. It was going to be a busy time for the next 28 days.
  • Ed MacDonald was happy for an upcoming extended trip to New Zealand and Australia.  He was going to miss his grand child time however.
  • Jim was happy that he and Barbara were going to be leaving soon on the Rotary Friendship Exchange to Australia.  Anna (with the help of others) was going to look after the bulletin while he is away.
  • Kevin was happy to have been in the right place to help a family in distress.
50/50: Garth Coffin had the right ticket, however he missed the joker and the $10 pot.

Closing: 12:55 pm

Adventure in Citizenship 2020
The Rotary Club of Truro is looking for young people in Colchester County to take part in the Adventure in Citizen Program.

The Adventure in Citizenship program brings together a select group of 200 students from across Canada to learn about Canadian democratic institutions through meetings with political leaders, senior officials and each other. The Rotary Club of Truro will participate in the program again this year and encourages 16 -18 year old high school students in Colchester County to apply.  The Club will pay for the selected candidate to fly to Ottawa and attend the program which runs from April 26-April 29,2020.

Our application process calls for a short essay (approx. 250 words) or a 30-90 second creative video on “What does being a Canadian citizen mean to you?“ The deadline for application to the Rotary Club of Truro is February 14th.  Send completed essays or videos to kenmacdo@gmail.com by midnight February 14, 2020.

The second stage of the process is a short interview by several Rotary members on February 20th.

Share the post on the clubs Facebook page and refer as many young people that you know (or their parents) to the program.
