Oct 28, 2019 Bulletin

Opening/Chair: Darlene was chair today and she asked Laurie to lead the group in the singing of O Canada.  The was followed by a moment of personal reflection.

Visitors/Guests: Mark Mason was accompanied by an international student.

Speaker: AG Jim  Gould was the speaker today.  He ran a 35 minute video created by Chair of the District team (AKA District Governor) Louisa Horne. Louisa would not be making the usual DG visits to clubs.

The video highlighted the Rotary International and Rotary District 7820 priorities for the year as well as outlined the resources that the club might call upon for help.   The singular message was innovation and change.

AG Jim was thanked by Tom Savary on behalf of the club.

Member Health: It was reported that the celebration of life service for Joe Kenny was well attended by Rotarians. Alana was appreciative of the support by the club.

It was also reported that Christine's husband Bill had been moved to long term care in Pugwash.  Hopefully he will be able to be moved closer at some point.

Announcements and Reports:
  • It was noted that Louisa Horne had a major article in this month's Rotarian
  • Tom announced the first vocational tour of the year.  On Nov 7th we would be visiting the Raging Crow. Check out the club event and register soon so that they will know how many to expect.
  • Barbara reported that all the schools had material on the short term exchange.  If you know of parents and/or students who might be interested, have them apply before the deadline (the 31st).
  • Kevin asked for people to sign up to be chair at some future meeting.  Also send him suggestions for speakers.
President's Report:
  • Lech thanked Kevin for his great work populating the speakers and meeting chair schedule.
  • He also reminded everyone of the next Director's meeting to be held on Nov 5th in the NSCC Truro Campus Boardroom.  One of the major topics will be the strategic plan for the club.  All members are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Happy Mug:
  • Jim was happy for a great RLI session this past weekend. The Rotary Club Truro was well represented.  (see story below)  Congratulations to Ryan for graduating from Part 3.  The next session is April 4th in Dieppe. Check out the RLI site.
  • Kevin was looking for winter storage for Sharon's Miata.  That would make her happy.
  • Laurie was happy to be retired as of last Thursday.  She'd been busy every since and happy for it.
  • Dave Mills was happy there were at least 2 or 3 Toronto fans in the audience.
  • Darlene was happy for a great RLI event.
50/50: Al Cooze had the right ticket but missed the joker so the $29 pot continues to build.

Truro Rotarians Attend Rotary Leadership Institute

Four Rotarians from The Rotary Club of Truro attended the Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) sessions held at the NSCC on Saturday Oct 26th.  New club member Lily Scales took Part 1 while Darlene Stevenson and Anna Rutherford took Part 2.  Past president Ryan Beazley graduated from the program having completed Part 3.

In addition to taking courses, three Truro Rotarians played an active role in making the day a success.  Laurie Sandeson facilitated her first sessions during the day.  Barbara Goit helped Jim with registration as well a mentored other new facilitators.

A total of 58 Rotarians from around the region took part in the program.  All learned more about Rotary from each other.  Congratulations on a successful session.

The next RLI session is being held on April 4, 2020 in Dieppe NB.  Hopefully a number of Rotarians from Truro will attend that session.  Registration  and program details can be found at https://rliatlanticdiv.org/

New DalAC Rotaract Club

The Rotary Club of Truro is proud to support a new Rotaract Club at Dalhousie University, Agricultural Campus. The Rotaract club was launched this September and includes over 21 members. Members  participated in Truro Rotary Club’s Bollywood event, and the president performed a Bollywood dance.

The members have been volunteering weekly at the local food bank, filling bags and serving clients.

On Oct 24th, World Polio Day, the club launched the Purple Pinkie campaign, selling cupcakes and stamping pinkies on a poster that will be displayed on campus. The campaign will continue to run at the campus pub, serving purple drinks fundraising for polio. Club members will be participating in a leadership conference hosted by Dalhousie University.

The Rotaract Club is planning on supporting the Christmas Index Program operated through Truro Rotary Club.

Great Work Rotactors!
