Opening/Chair: President Ryan was the chair today and he asked Mark to lead the group in the singing of O Canada. This was followed by the moment of personal reflection.
Visitors/Guests: Carrie Burke was a welcome guest again today.
Speaker: There was no outside speaker as this was a Club meeting.
Member Health: No report.
Announcements and Reports: There were several announcements made today:
Jim Goit made an announcement about the upcoming Rotary leadership Institute session that will be held on April 6th in Dieppe NB. Registration is now open and members of the club are invited to attend. It is a great experience that new (or relatively new) members should not miss. The club has traditionally paid the registration fee for a number of our members to attend. Check out the story below for more details or ask Jim or Barbara. It would be good to have a least a carload from Truro go up.
Jim also reported on the Rotary Ski Fun Day to be held at Ski Wentworth on March 10th. Planning was moving along and a notice and registration form will be sent out to members today. There is a version that can be edited as well on the website. Thank you to all those who have volunteered to help. It should be a fun time.
Tom announced that there would be a vocational tour of the Nook and Cranny followed by a social time. The event will be this Thursday, January 31, 2019 starting at 4:30 until 6:00pm. From Tom's email "Do you have questions regarding craft beer, where is it brewed, how is it shipped, and where is it stored? What is in those shiny vats on the other side of the glass, ale, beer, stout, or cider? Why are there so many different tastes to so many different kinds of craft beer, zesty to mild? Why are there different shades of ale, light to dark? Make your way to the Nook and Cranny for your very own tour, and find out the answers! Perhaps you would be open to try a craft beer!!"
Matt reported on the Yearbook. He had packages of material to hand out including the Business's picture, a thank you letter and a community supporter sticker. In some cases there was an invoice if it had not been paid. He asked solicitors to make their rounds to thank all their businesses.
Lydia announced that she and Allan were heading off on a 10 day assignment for the Canada Food Grains Bank to view projects. While they were gone, they will be connecting with one of our existing projects.
President's Report: President Ryan presented a list of club activities, director's decisions and membership changes since the last report in November.
We were sorry that long time member Marilyn Brown has resigned but we were happy that Dave Ritcey had joined us.
The club had come into the possession of a new portable speaker that could be used for presentations. Thanks to Keith Gillis from G & G computers.
The Adventure in Citizenship committee was actively soliciting for a candidate to go on the program.
The Club had approved support for two young people to go on the RI short term exchange program.
Al Cooze was taking over the financial duties from Les next July and the club has helped set him up to do so effectively.
The club has supported the Guatemalan Stove project with a cash contribution. Our VP Lech and his daughter were going on this trip next month.
The Club has supported a project at Maggie's place that has to do the Children's Mental Health. The funding will go toward getting the project started in its first year.
Work toward Charter Night on April 11th is well underway. The committee is still looking for a speaker however.
The format for Rotary Week (April 8th) is being reviewed. There will be some minor tweaks to make it even better.
Wayne Gillis has been working on the organizational structure and by laws for the club and the two Foundations. Things are still being discussed to move toward the final version that will see three organizations becoming two.
The Yearbook has already been reported on however Ryan thanked the committee for their hard work on our major fundraiser.
The international Committee has spent all their budget while the community committee still has some room left for projects. There is still time before July.
The Coldest Night of the year was coming up Feb 23rd and there was still discussion for a Rotary presence at the event.
Ryan answered some questions from members and was thanked for keeping the club up to date.
Happy Mug:
Matt was happy to announce that he and wife Amy were expecting their third child (this time a girl) in early April. Congratulations!
Brian was happy to have just returned from a cruise with family to the Southern Caribbean. Good times.
50/50: Ken MacDonald had the winning ticket but despite having help from Mark, could not come up with the Joker. The $23 pot builds.
