April 29, 2019 Bulletin

Opening/Chair: Jim Harman was the chair today and he lead the group in the singing of O Canada followed by a moment of personal reflection especially remembering all the victims of violence.

Visitors/Guests:  There were a number of visitors and guests today.
  • Kyle Andrews was a guest of Jim Harman
  • Nettah Burry, Secretary - Volunteer Coordinator, The Chart Society - Culture, Heritage & Art / High Tides Arts & Community Centre was our guest speaker
  • Lindsay Lamb a former member of the club was with us.
  • Wade and Pat Garrison, Members of the Rotary Club of Bridgewater & District were making a visit today.
  • Olivia VanRoestal was a guest of Anna Rutherford. Olivia is a student working with Anna at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colchester.
Speaker: Nettah Burry is the Secretary - Volunteer Coordinator for the CHArt Society - Culture, Heritage & Art / High Tides Arts & Community Centre in Maitland. Described by Jim as the "Welcome Wagon" for Maitland, she was not long in recruiting Jim and Kyle into the activities of the CHArt Society.  They had not even unloaded the truck to move in!

Originally from NFL, Nettah has worn many hats over the years as well as lived and worked in many places. She studied Art and Humanities, has been an educator and counselor; taught english to new Canadians and worked in a rehab center.

Now Nettah is very involved with using the Arts as a platform for community development.  The High Tides Arts and Community Center is housed in a former United Church that had been sold.  It is used for all manner of activities in the community not the least of which is theatre and the performing arts. The objective of the Society is to provide artistic performances for all ages and she showed a list of musical talent that has been in Maitland in the past year.  The society also attempts to preserve the heritage of the area in buildings as well as tradition, saving the heart of the community.  There is a lot of dressing up in period costumes in Maitland judging by the pictures and description.

It is the live theatre however that is a real passion for Nettah.  The community produces its own live theatre involving local people, giving participants the opportunity to experience their own "voice", teaching them to be aware of their surroundings and become less anxious or lonely and better communicators in day to day life.

Nettah was thanked by Jim Harman.

Member Health: It was reported that long time club member Al Hollis had died on friday after a period of declining health.  Al was best remembered by club members for his dedication to singing. The club was once known as a "singing" club because of the hard work of Al.  He will be missed.  No funeral arrangements have been announced.

Announcements and Reports:
  • Secretary Jane reported that she had information about a pre-retirement seminar that would be occurring in June for all folks over 55.  It was more than just financial advice.  Let her know if you are interested and she will forward the invitation.
  • VP Lech reminded people that we might be one of the households that receive the survey mentioned by our charter night speaker Danny Graham.  If you do, please complete and return as the results are important to us all.
  • AG Jim Gould reminded everyone that there was still time to register for the District Conference in Pictou.  It is a 2 day event this year, May 10 and 11.  You can register for one day if you like.  Check out the website http://7820conference.com for details.
President's Report:
  • President Ryan made note of the Workshop on Diversity in the Workplace that is being held at the Truro Fire Department this Thrusday.  Please let him know if you are attending and would like to represent the club.
  • He announced that a group lead by Laurie Sandeson and including himself, Jim Gould and Derrick Higgins had met to plan the  RYLA event that will be held on May 31st.  They were looking for helpers.
  • Tree planting was happening again with year with the Scouts. Planting would take place on Saturday May 4th at the top of Young Street.  Start time is 9:00 am.  Please come out and get paired up with a scout and plant some trees.
  • President Ryan also reported that he and Adam Wyllie had visited with Nick Sharpe of BBBS at the new North River site to talk about community projects. He announced that there would be an Open house at the site in North River on June 28th but the really exciting news is that the ice cream bar would be opening on May 11th.
Happy Mug: The only happy Rotarian (or one that admitted to it) was Wade Garrison who was pleased to hear our rendition of O Canada.  He noted most had the most recent changes in lyrics.

50/50:  Judy Nicholson had the right ticket but she had to leave for another appointment.  Her proxy was Sharon Corcoran but despite having help from Lloyd Coady, they could not come up with the joker. So the pot builds.

South Colchester Academy Interact’s Coffee House

South Colchester Academy (SCA) Interact’s Coffee House and Art Show held Wed. April 10th was real success drawing a crowd of almost 100 students, teachers, parents and interested people.  Interactors did a great job of organizing:  lining up students and teachers to perform, designing and printing a program, arranging for sound, the building, time and place, advertising, soliciting sponsors (Third Place Transition House, Roop’s Esso, Brookfield Bakery and Hurricane Heidi’s Café and Tim Hortons).     In the photo are  four hard working Interact students Delaney McLellan, Bryn Rankin, Chris Ross, Livi King and Alex Zhou who organized the Coffee House with staff advisor Chris Ross.

Organizing is no small feat!  The stage was set with five microphones monitored by three students on the sound controls.  Livi King was our host for the evening, introducing each performance.    Individual performers were outstanding. Such beautiful voices.  Incredible guitar playing . Who would otherwise know the talent that is among students and teachers at SCA.

Shelby Ryan’s stage presence was superb, drawing the crowd in with her relaxed manner, helped she says by grounding herself singing in her bare feet!  Hannah Kennedy surprised us with her singing and playing, ‘Rolling in the Deep’ and a second song she learned after school after a special request. ‘Before Monday’, a group of four very talented musicians along with their teacher sang three popular songs much enjoyed by the crowd.  Students dancing in the upstairs hall behind the windows further brought the music to life.  Thanks to Mr Chris Ross for all the help along the way to make this event such a success.

Each Interact Club is encouraged to do two projects a year, one local and one international.  SCA Interactors chose to do the Coffee House and Art Show, proceeds for Transition House.  Their proceeds, close to $300.00, will be matched dollar for dollar by the Rotary Club of Truro.

‘Before Monday’, a group of four very talented musicians along with their teacher, was just one of the acts that entertained the crowd a the coffee house.
The Interact students organized and Art Show and Sale held concurrently with the Coffee House.
